In the 1970s, an intertribal group of about 20 Native students came together to grow their community at UW–Madison and call for the university to create an American Indian Studies department. 50 years later, we celebrate their successful advocacy.

While the Wunk Sheek community garden is not the first student garden in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s history, or even the first in the Wunk Sheek’s history, it is certainly one of the newest — planted for the first time just this past summer.

Each year, Wunk Sheek and campus partners host a series of events across the university to celebrate the rich history, culture, and heritage of Native people at UW–Madison.
