The second issue of The Black Voice, released in November 1971, that covered topics of police brutality, the Black press and job inequality.

The film chronicles the history of the only journalistic publication created by and for Black students at UW–Madison. “We the Vision” is the tale of The Black Voice’s origins, influence, and legacy told by many of the voices who have shaped its success.

The documentary commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Black Voice, which was during the 2020-21 academic year. “We the Vision” will showcase the provocative creations, immovable persistence, and palpable power that exist in the spirit of this platform established to amplify the stories and truths of students who are often silenced and forgotten in the larger narrative of their campus.

About The Black Voice

The Black Voice was founded in 1971 and was revived as a digital publication in 2015, growing a little bit every year. The organization aims to offer a platform for the historically silenced voices of Black students to be heard on UW’s campus and beyond.

The publication is currently a registered student organization with more than 30 alumni, many of whom have gone on to careers as filmmakers, television anchors, business reporters, artists, and other kinds of journalists and professional communicators at places like PBS, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, NBC, and the Kansas City Star.
