Africa Lozano-Yarl serves as the director of the Academic Coaching and Tutoring Services program. She was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and grew up in east Los Angeles and Madison. She earned her bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies and her master’s in educational leadership and policy analysis from UW–Madison. She is a TRIO alumna and was the first in her family to earn a college degree. Her passion for higher education stems from her personal experiences striving to provide for her family and learning how to find family and academic resources in the university environment. Providing resources is part of who she is. She is grateful to work in a place that allows her to engage with that passion and explore the intersectionality of race, equity, academic success, mentoring, women’s empowerment and Latinx rights.
