From Friday, March 12, through Sunday, March 14, campus will be hosting the screening of the movie Picture a Scientist, a 2020 Tribeca Film Festival documentary highlighting the struggles of three famous female scientists, and about gender bias in the sciences overall. The screening will be followed by two panels on Monday, March 15 – one for faculty, staff, and postdocs at noon, and a second panel for all graduate and undergraduate students at 4 pm.
PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
These events are free and open to all UW-Madison students and employees, but advance registration is required by March 13. Please visit our website at https://ls.wisc.edu/women-in-stemm for more information and to access the registration links.
To promote campus-wide engagement, we particularly encourage members of the UW-Madison community who are not women in STEMM disciplines to also participate in these events.
