Freshmen in Madison-area high schools have more difficulty with Algebra 1 than any other class. And those who don’t pass Algebra 1 by 10th grade are half as likely to ever complete high school. A new tutoring program, Achievement Connections, has been created to help address this issue.
Achievement Connections (http://www.morgridge.wisc.edu/AchievementConnections.htm) is focused on providing Algebra I students with one-on-one tutoring with a volunteer who will meet with them at least two (2) hours per week throughout the spring semester. Volunteers will tutor at one of four (4) area high schools: Madison West, Madison East, Memorial, or Middleton. Comprehensive training will be provided on-site to volunteers, so this is a great way for students to get engaged even if they have never tutored before! An algebra competency test is required of all tutors.
We are looking for positive and dedicated student volunteers who are confident in their math skills and can commit to tutoring for at least two hours per week. Volunteering for Achievement Connections is a great way for UW-students to give back to the larger Madison community and make a difference in the lives of a high school student!
