Thursday, January 15 at 7 pm-9 pm.
Conrad A. Elvehjem Building, 800 University Ave., Room L140
After recent police killings of unarmed black men around the United States, several politicians, community leaders and organizations have called for mandatory police body cameras. While some such as President Obama have touted body cams as an important part of police accountability, others have suggested that body cams will simply lead to more surveillance of already-monitored communities.
This debate will address the question here in Madison and feature Madison residents debating the following proposition: Police body cameras are an important part of the solution to the problem of police violence.
On the affirmative side will be Amelia Royko Maurer and Russell Beckman and on the negative side will be Morathi Adams and a partner. Each side will present two speeches, ask the other team questions, and then we will open to questions from the community. The debate will be moderated by UW-Madison Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Politics and Culture, Karma Chávez.
Please join us in L140 Elvehjem Building on UW’s campus (800 University Ave, right next door to the Chazen Art Museum) on Thursday, January 15 from 7-9 pm. Open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
