Internships in the New Economy Student Leadership Symposium

 Internships in the New Economy Student Leadership Symposium is the second in a series of campus-wide events designed to help UW–Madison students sharpen their leadership skills, develop new networks, and ultimately achieve full employment upon graduation.   More specifically, this event will expose diverse UW–Madison students to national organizations focused  on  diversifying  the  next  generation  of  leadership  in  the  non-profit,  corporate, community, and government sectors of leadership.

 The event goals are:

To activate the VP & CDO Leadership & Personal Branding Framework with its focus on:

(1)  Identifying  your  passion/potential  focus  and  embedding  it  at  the  center  of  your leadership development approach,

(2) constantly developing your formal credentials and knowledge,

(3) building strategic relationships and networks with mentors, personal coaches, and advisors,

(4) engaging in high-impact learning experiences,

(5) defining pathways to career and life success by identifying role models and avoidance models of leadership  and  development,  and

 (6)  activating  the  model  with  relentless  focus, discipline, and resilience for more than 10 years;

To showcase leading national organizations that focus on diversifying the next generation of leadership by helping students to intentionally develop their leadership skills and abilities;

To create a leadership development context in which students, especially diverse first- and second-year students, begin developing a more powerful understanding of how to effectively access national and global internship opportunities across all sectors of organizational life;

 To create an inclusive and engaged environment for diverse students, faculty, staff, and external community participants.

Our Leadership Development Organizational Guests include:

Kicking off this inspirational night is billionaire entrepreneur Michael V. Roberts, author of Action Has No Season –  Strategies & Secrets to Gaining Wealth & Authority.  Roberts is one of the country’s most successful African American businessmen. He runs Roberts Companies with his brother, Steven Roberts, and together they own 12 hotels, more than a dozen TV stations and several shopping centers around the country. Raised in a middle-class family, he worked hard to get where he is in life.

“We weren’t rich. We weren’t poor, but we just never had any money,” Michael said in an interview with CNN. With most of his businesses based where he grew up in North St. Louis, Missouri, Roberts has been a major player in spurring economic growth in the African American community there over the last 35 years. He estimates his family-owned company is worth $1 billion.  Michael V. Roberts is making history … with his family-owned corporation, which owns 76 companies and boasts a staff of 1,100 employees. Roberts and his brother’s corporate achievements were featured on CNN’s “Black In America” special in 2009. In the special, Michael mentions that one of the St. Louis hotels they now own used to ban black people as guests.
