Join Us for “Mentoring, Mingling & Mama’s Treats”

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Madison new Badger scholars and welcome back to our returning Badgers!
I want to invite you to the third year of a special gathering hosted by the Office of the Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer and the Madison Chapter of the 100 Black Men, “Mentoring, Mingling, and Mama’s Treats.”  While the entire campus community is invited to participate, this reception is specifically targeted towards African American/Black Males in the UW-Madison community.

Our event is scheduled for Thursday evening, Sept. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the East Atrium (the corner of Park Street and University Avenue) and Plenary Room of Grainger Hall in the UW-Madison School of Business.  The reception is an opportunity for us to connect, fellowship, and forge new relationships while sharing good food*, tips and resources to make the coming year ahead the best yet.

*(A taste of what’s to come: Mini Crab Cakes with Remoulade,  East Carolina BBQ Chicken Skewers, Jerk Chicken Skewers, Buffalo Wings, Moambe Chicken and Peanut Stew (vegetarian) with white Rice, Dirty Rice, Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage on the side, Cucumber Salad, Corn with Tomato, Okra and Lima Beans, Collard Greens with Ham, Corn Bread, Chef Rod’s Yogurt & Fruit Parfait, Seven Up Cake, and Babcock Vanilla Ice Cream, )

We want to welcome new faces and catch up with others on the importance of having a network of supportive friends, colleagues and mentors.  My goal – and I hope yours, too – is to create  strong, meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime both on campus and across the community.

To that end, I hope you will join my office and the Madison Chapter of 100 Black Men for this important fall event.  We look forward to seeing you on Sept. 12.

Moments in Badger History:

Carson Gulley Center, a fixture in UW-Madison’s lakeshore neighborhood since the 1920s, has reopened after undergoing a full renovation that showcases the character of the building’s original architecture.

Carson Gulley Center was originally named Van Hise Refectory, after UW President Charles Van Hise. It was completed in 1926 as the dining hall for the new men’s residence halls, Tripp and Adams.

In 1966, the building was renamed after Carson Gulley, who was head chef in the building for 27 years, until 1954. This was the first university building named after a civil service employee and the first named after an African-American. Besides being an extraordinary chef, Gulley was also a civil rights pioneer, breaking racial barriers in teaching, radio, television and housing, and doing it all prior to what is thought of as the start of the modern civil rights movement.
