Engaged Scholarship Roundtable: Narrating Blindness in Wisconsin

The next Bagels and Research presentation is this Friday, December 5, from 9-10 in the Red Gym, Room 154, at the Morgridge Center for Public Service. Our presenter is Annika Konrad, Ph.D. candidate in Composition and Rhetoric in the Department of English, who will present “Narrating Blindness in Wisconsin: How a community-writing project led to questions about everyday rhetorical acts surrounding disability.”

Annika will tell the story of how a personal stake in disability led her to launch a community-writing project for people who are blind and visually impaired, ultimately leading to her dissertation project. She will detail the process of launching the project and balancing her roles as writing instructor, community-writing leader and participant. She will then explain research questions raised by the service project, including when and how people communicate about blindness in their everyday lives and the resources available to them in doing so. Annika will conclude by explaining the design of her study and some preliminary findings. She is eager for feedback on how to sustain momentum for the project as she transitions from participant to participant-observer/researcher.

The Morgridge Center’s Bagels and Research presentations highlight community-based research at UW. Presenters include graduate students, faculty/staff and community practitioners. This series showcases the breadth of community-based research on campus by providing in-depth examples of current research as it relates to student learning outcomes, community impacts, and theoretical exploration.
